This year’s championship will be the 42nd one and will be held at Buffalo, New York, USA. The KeyBank Center and the Harbor Center will be the two main venues where the matches will be held, while the Buffalo Sabres hosts the championship. It will be the second time they hosted such an event since the first time in 2011. Doors open on December 26, 2017, and the closing ceremony is scheduled for January 5, 2018.
Last year, it was held in Toronto, Canada. The Gold Medal went to the USA, the Silver to Canada and the Bronze to Russia. There is no telling on what will happen this year. Canada and the USA seem to have a real head to head competition. Pick your favorite via the best VIP-IBC platform for ice hockey!
There will be 10 countries competing in total, separated in two groups in the Preliminary Round. Group A includes United States, Canada, Denmark, Slovakia and Finland. You can be sure that there will be a lot of close quarters’ competition here. Group B includes Russia, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Belarus.
The opening match On December 26 of the championship will be between Russia and the Czech Republic, at Key Bank Center. However, everyone have their eyes focused on the “mother of battles” between the two main contenders Canada and the U.S.A. scheduled for December 29. Besides everything else, there is something completely unique in this game. It will be the first time a match will be held outdoors at any of the top-level IIHF World Championships. And that will be at the New Era field.
The championship has also attracted a lot of attention by the media. Valimaki, a member of last year’s Finnish team, stated that Finland will be stronger this year. The last championship was full of misfortunes for Finland. They were able to win just one game during the preliminary round and ended in a “do or die” game against Latvia in the relegation series to remain in the top group. Indeed a strange turn of events for the gold medalist of 2016 in Helsinki.
The Preliminary Round ends on December 31. After the turn of the new year, the quarterfinals will be starting on January 2. The top four teams from each group will proceed to the Playoff Round, while the last ones go to the Relegation Round.
