The Cheltenham Racecourse 2017 got started on 14th of March. The tension is growing more and more as we get closer to the grand day when we’ll find the winner.
On first day of the racecourse we had the second favourite Buveur D’Air, ridden by Noel Fehily, stormed to victory in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. The Nicky Henderson-trained six-year-old, a 5-1 shot, came home ahead of My Tent Or Yours and Petit Mouchoir . It was Fehily’s second Champion Hurdle victory, and owner JP McManus’ 50th winner at Cheltenham. Yanworth – the 9-4 favourite – never settled and placed seventh. Henderson’s sixth winner makes him the most successful trainer in the history of the race, following successes with See You Then (1985, 1986, 1987), Punjabi (2009) and Binocular (2010).
The 15th of March marks the Champion Chase day, where Douvan, ridden by the trainer Willie Mullins, is expected to be in the spotlight. Mullins and his Douvan seem to be insurmountable and it won’t be a surprise if they will win the headline race of Day 2 for the first time.
When he was asked for a statement Mullins said:
“He’s in good form and everything has gone well. At this stage we’re just hoping everything goes well on the day. When you are going to Cheltenham with a favourite like Douvan, it is relief rather than joy when they win. When you have a 25-1 winner that isn’t expected, that is joy. There is fair bit of expectation with Douvan, so you just want to keep him right and get there. I only think every morning about keeping him sound.”
Indeed, it is hard to imagine someone Douvan being exceeded by anyone. The short price of about 1.27 this morning reflects the difference in class here with Fox Norton next in the betting at 15.5. Matchbook has got a cracking offer to make that price a bit more accessible – Lay any horse in the Neptune Novices Hurdle at 13:30 and get: £50 Risk-Free on Douvan in the Champion Chase.
