presents the Special Olympics World Winter Games
. The world’s greatest humanitarian and sports event for this year has been scheduled for the cities of Graz, Schladming, Ramsau, and Styria in Austria from the 14th to the 25th March 2017.
4.4 million athletes from 170 different countries compete to participate in the final stage of this competition. For over 40 years, the Special Olympic World Winter Games
have been spreading the message that people with disabilities can achieve great things when given a chance under the appropriate conditions. As a result, the International Olympics Committee
gave their official approval for these games to use the name “Olympics” in 1971.
Approximately 3,000 participants will travel to the mountains of Austria for the final stages of the organization making their dream come true. Based on the classification of their disability the will compete in:
- shoot balls
- shoot pucks
The age and the level and kind of disability set the groups for each participant. This is done for reasons of fairness and equal competition and of course to maintain the excitement for both the participants and the fans that will rush to the various venues to watch the Games.
However, it is not the games themselves that are of interest this time. It is the efforts of people that did not simply give up because life dealt them a hard hand. It is the efforts of coaches that trained people that are not easy to train no matter how dedicated they are. It is the efforts of a multitude of experts and volunteers that tend to the needs of people that are in constant need of attention and supervision. This is what is celebrated in all the special Olympics either Summer or Winter. The triumph of will over adversity.
