Way back, in October 1972 at Stanford University, the first ever video game competition took place, the best Spacewar! Players showed up to compete for the great prize of a subscription to Rolling Stone magazine. Since then, things changed a lot; nowadays, the top competitive gamers can make millions of dollars per year. The popularity of eSports have been growing exponentially since the late 2000s and it is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world.
However, the eSports world still face a lot of problems, such as the use of performance-enhancing drugs, player exploitation, and more, most of which come from a lack of proper regulation and understanding of the sew market; and because of that, 12 different sport organizations from various countries around Europe agreed to form the European eSports Federation in 2019.
The discussions took place at the European eSports Meeting Berlin on April 10th, 2019, where organizations from France, Germany, United Kingdom, Hungary, Serbia, Turkey, Russia, Sweden, Slovakia, Ukraine, Austria, and Belgium pledged their support for The Berlin Declaration and the federation.
The president of eSport-Bund Deutschland, Hans Jagnow stated: “We realized that we all shared an eSports vision for Europe. To have this process actually started in Berlin and bringing so many nations together is an important step for structuring eSports in the region. There are many details yet to decide, but this will be part of the ongoing negations. We stand united by the goal of establishing a European eSports Federation.”
A follow-up meeting will be held on May 28 at the Swiss eSports Federation.
