Several NBA and NFL players protested this week against the death of George Floyd, which happened this past Monday, May 25, in Minneapolis, USA. The infamous video shows 46-year-old Floyd being choked by a policeman. Floyd was already immobilized but the policeman kept the hold on his neck for around seven minutes. “I can’t breathe,” repeated Floyd, without receiving help from any other policeman present.
The video was repudiated by LeBron James and many other American basketball stars, who have been protesting police violence against black people for years. On the day of the incident, local police released a statement stating that Floyd had died “after a medical incident during a police interaction” caused by the suspect’s resistance to the police’s order to get out of his car. The police action was launched due to a complaint about the use of fake cards at a convenience store. According to the police, Floyd “seemed to be drunk”. The four policemen involved in the case have been dismissed and will be charged with murder by Floyd’s family.
“This is murder. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with the United States? ” Said Steve Kerr, coach of the Golden State Warriors and a former Chicago Bulls player. LeBron James also published a photo of quarterback Colin Kaepernick, a symbol of the fight against racial inequality in the United States. In 2016, when he was the holder of the San Francisco 49ers, he drew attention by kneeling during the performance of the national anthem.
This was the peaceful way in which Kaepernick protested racism, but the attitude caused his dismissal and the owners of the NFL franchises began to ignore him. Since then, the 32-year-old quarterback has been unemployed. Since peaceful protests did not work, now people have taken to the streets protesting, and sadly also looting and rioting. We can only wonder when these people will receive the respect they deserve.
