Chief executive Richard Masters said ahead of the new Premier League campaign that it would be „difficult” to say the former Russian owner’s era at Chelsea has been good for the English top flight’s image. He said the unique circumstances in which they found themselves had given to sport challenges that must overcome. In this tumult, nothing better than the best online sports betting agent to enlighten you.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich lost his licence to run the club last March. Following sanctions imposed by the British government, the Premier League board removed the Russian billionaire from his role as director of Chelsea Football Club. This is a further consequence of the invasion of Ukraine initiated by Vladimir Putin, to whom he is said to be close.

The glorious marks of a dubious past

According to the Premier League chief executive, the Russian billionaire’s links to Vladimir Putin cast a shadow over his legacy after the invasion of Ukraine. The fact that there was no test of the owners and directors when the Russian oligarch took over Chelsea may have contributed to this outcome. That is the reason why these tests have been put in place as well as the strengthening of the annual turnover test. Abramovich’s assets – including Chelsea – have been frozen, and Masters says the last few months of the Russian’s tenure in English football have eclipsed what he achieved at the club over the previous two decades.

Abramovich’s reign saw the Londoners enjoy the best period of sustained success in the club’s history. Indeed, the Blues have won the Champions League twice, as well as the Europa League twice, five FA Cups, three League Cups, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. Furthermore, Chelsea have also been able to sign some of the world’s best players with the financial transformation overseen by the billionaire.

An uncertain future

Today the English club is managed by the American Todd Boehly. The clubs new owner has sparked criticism. However, he is sparing no effort to maintain the standard imposed by Roman Abramovich for this new season. Will he achieve it? It rest to be seen.
