The 2019 Best award edition was recently celebrated in Italy, and we already know who are the winners. The votes were counted from a series of national teams’ coaches, team captains, a bunch of journalists, and of course, the fans. The biggest stars of the night were Megan Rapinoe and Lionel Messi, who are currently playing on Reign FC (NWSL) and Barcelona (LaLiga) respectively. As you may know, this is an individual award created by FIFA in 2016 and it is a substitute of the old ‘FIFA World Player’ award. Cristiano Ronaldo already won two prizes before and just minutes before the start of the ceremony, we knew that he was not going to assist to this edition, giving the press a small spoiler for the possible outcome in the men’s category.
These are the final results:
– Best FIFA Men’s Player: Lionel Messi
– Best FIFA Women’s Player: Megan Rapinoe
– Best FIFA Men’s Coach: Jurgen Klopp
– Best FIFA Women’s Coach: Jill Ellis
– FIFA Puskas Award: Dániel Zsóri
– Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper: Allison Becker
– Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper: Sari van Veenendaal
– FIFA Fan Award: Silvia Grecco
For Lionel Messi, it is his first award, beating Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus, who already won this prize in 2016 and 2017, and Virgil van Dijk from Liverpool. ‘La Pulga’ helped Barcelona to win the Spanish league and got eliminated in the last Champions League’s semi-finals. In his national team – Argentina, Messi also led the team to the Copa America semi-finals, where they lost against Brazil.
Megan Rapinoe was the best female player after an amazing World Cup played and won by her and her national team, USA. She has been also known for being a public activist and after receiving the award, she took a moment to talk and inspire about fighting against racism, homophobia, and how football can be improved to make this world a better place.
The surprise of the night was the Puskas Award, a prize given to the best goal of the year and the winner was the 18-years-old Daniel Zsori from Hungary. The goal was a stunning bicycle kick from the edge of the main box in the 93rd minute which gave his team the final 2-1 victory.
It was a fantastic edition of this great award from the red carpet to the final speech by Messi; we hope to keep watching all these stars fighting in the field in order to come back next year with more surprises, better stats, and more incredible goals.
