Counter Logic Gaming will cease to exist?
The problem of funding an endeavor exists in all industries. Even in new ones where it would be a rather unexpectable development. Yet, this seems to be the case with Counter Logic Gaming.
The American e-sports team founded in 2010 is apparently coming to an end. The parent company, Madison Square Garden, informed the CLG board that there would be layoffs this week, including the team’s president and co-founder, George «HotshotGG» Georgallidis. Furthermore, they would sell their spot in the LCS (League Championship Series) and dissolve the traditional League of Legends team. The development is a major upset for all the top Asian and European bookmakers since there are now no clear paths to follow.
A name synonymous to the game
The history of Counter Logic is almost intertwined with the history of competitive League of Legends. Their roster has included many renowned and talented players, making the organization a strong player in the professional scene. They also currently have a Smash Bros team and CLG: Red, a female Counter Strike: Global Offense team. The fate of both is uncertain, as it has only been confirmed that there is buying interest for the LoL team. One of the main interested parties being NRG, another organization that participated in the LCS in the 2016 edition.
Other Possible Buyers
This news comes shortly after TSM, another founding organization of the LCS, announced its likely exit from the Professional League of Legends due to financial problems. If these sales are going to go through, there are a few other possible buyers of these LCS franchise slots besides NRG:
- Sentinels
Currently with Valorant, Apex Legends and Halo teams, the organization was founded as a League of Legends team and has participated in the LCS in the pre-franchise era, it was the former Phoenix1. In 2018 it changed its name to Sentinels.
- Moist Esports
Founded in 2021, they are an e-sports organization that has a great popularity for their achievements in games like Guilty Gear Strive, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros, Brawhalla, Valorant, and Apex Legends.
- MrBeast Esports
One of the biggest names of the moment when it comes to content creation. Last year they announced that they would, with 100% certainty, buy and build a team to compete in the LCS World Championship, and that it was not a matter of «if» but a matter of «when».
