Why betting against the favorite is a good choice in the long term

There are unarguably a good number of betting strategies that punters employ in betting, geared towards making at least, if not consistent, substantial gains from the markets.  Unfortunately, there is none that carries no risk or with a 100%-win rate. There will always be losses as well as gains. However, the difference lies in a set that is capable of minimizing the losses while maximizing the profits so that in the long run, there can always be a positive outcome. To that effect, there is one way of placing wagers that is easily overlooked and in fact hated by the best Asian and European bookmakers.

What are the favorites?

The answer is rather simple. When a team or a player is considered to be far superior to their opponents, they get the title of the favorite. The difference is amply shown through the odds. Favorites get very low yields, while the underdogs get rather high ones.  This is fundamentally how the odds are calculated. And here lies the major issue that no one seems to realize.

If people bet on the favorites at low odds (1.05 – 1.20) and they keep winning a series of 20 bets, the grand total profit will probably be around 2.4% of the total bankroll. The maximum gain for a 1 Euro bet is 4 Euros. This cannot be a satisfactory outcome for any punter.

However…

Usually, the underdogs get odds between 3 and 10. The higher the number, the lower the possibility to win the game. On the same 20 bets as above, staking 1 Euro per time, statistically, there will be at least two times when the outcome will be in favor of the underdogs. While this may not look profitable for short-term betting, or even medium-term, if one does the math for wagers over a long period of time, the profit margins are quite higher than the returns of constantly betting on the favorites.

OK, but there are two kinds of underdogs

The general principle may make sense but which underdog to choose? There are players and teams that have the potential to cause some major upsets, but there are others that the chances for a win are astronomical. It’s always a matter of having some good information. It could very well be that the favorite may be suffering a decline in their performance, or even having a bad season altogether, while the underdog may be in the best of shapes. The psychology of one side may be at its lowest, while the morale of the other to be at an all-time high. Every single detail counts.

This is a strategy that will probably need to be extended for over a year to bring a satisfactory return. But it is well worth the effort to open a betting account via agent and try it if you have the patience needed.
