How does the playoff picture look like?
While the teams that will participate in the Eastern Conference playoffs are almost decided, the playoff race on the Western Conference is closely contested.
Only 9 Eastern teams, including a shorthanded Washington Wizards, will be present in Orlando. On the other hand, 14 teams will be competing against each other to complete the regular season in the Western Conference. 6 teams in the West have clinched the playoffs so far, which means there are still 2 spots to be shared between 6 teams. The Mavericks are way more advantaged compared to the others with 40 wins and 27 losses. They will probably clinch the playoffs only after a few games. However, the fight for the last spot will for sure continue until the last minute. Of course, the reward for the last spot will be facing the Lakers. While it is highly unlikely that whoever clinches the 8th spot will manage to upset LeBron in the first round, the Grizzlies, Pelicans, Blazers, Kings, Spurs, and Suns are hoping to prolong their stay in Orlando. Here is how the NBA standings before the coronavirus seemed like.
The title favorites
Milwaukee Bucks: The Bucks led by the Greek Freak already assured the top seed in Eastern Conference. They have the best overall record and they will have a chance to improve their regular season record after the NBA returns. However, they do not really care about the regular season at all. In fact, we are sure that Giannis does not even care about getting out of the Eastern Conference. They are clearly the best team in their conference. The question is though if they are good enough to beat the teams coming out of the West.
Los Angeles Clippers: If there is one team that we can claim to have benefited from the hiatus, it’s definitely the Clippers. The Clippers were already the favorites to win it all even before the season started but their star players sat out in the bench most of the games be it because of the injuries or the load management. Even so, they managed to occupy the 2nd place in the Western Conference packed with great teams. The reason why we are claiming that the Clippers have benefited from the hiatus is that the players have found the time to restore their health. Kawhi will be 100% ready now and Paul George, hopefully, will not deal anymore with the injuries. Another advantage of the Clippers is that they won’t have to worry about the Lakers fans anymore. If they were to meet the Lakers in the Western Conference before the coronavirus lockdown, there would be probably more Lakers fans than Clippers fans in the Staples center throughout the series.
Los Angeles Lakers: It is mind-blowing to think that a player in his 17th season is still the biggest factor determining the faith of the league. You know about whom we’re talking. Rest assure, Lakers fans. The King will not fail you. We are 100% sure that he trained the hardest in this 3-month hiatus. All things aside, Lakers were at their peak before the coronavirus break. LeBron and Davis led their team to the first spot in the Western Conference. Recently J.R. Smith joined the Lakers to help LeBron to win his 4th title. However, we all know how their relationship ended when J.R. spoiled everything in the 2018 NBA finals.
