“While the COVID-19 pandemic presents formidable challenges, we are hopeful of finishing the season in a safe and responsible manner based on strict protocols now being finalized with public health officials and medical experts. We also recognize that as we prepare to resume play, our society is reeling from recent tragedies of racial violence and injustice, and we will continue to work closely with our teams and players to use our collective resources and influence to address these issues in very real and concrete ways.”
Other Dates Announced
As part of the plan, 13 teams from Western Conference and 9 teams from Eastern Conference teams will play eight “benchmarking” matches during the regular season at Walt Disney World Resort. Also, for the eighth spot, which will be reserved for the last team that will participate in the Playoffs, there will be a possible play-in tournament.
The play-in tournament will be played between the ninth and eighth placed teams. If the difference in victories is less than four matches. In this case, the team in the ninth place must beat the team in the eighth place twice. So that they can participate in the playoffs, while the team in the eighth place must win in one of the two possible matches. The teams will start training in Orlando between 9-11 July.
The league also announced the dates beyond the July 31 – October 12 process. The Draft Lottery will be held on August 25. The NBA Draft is expected to take place on October 15. Also the 2020-21 season will most likely begin on the first of December. Although the training camps will begin on November 10, the free agency period is expected to start on October 18. Also, the teams were told that the start date of this period might be flexible.
