Glossary for Golf Part II

In the first part of our presentation, we introduced you to the world of golf. We discussed about the place where a match is played. And we talked about how the score is kept. Now it is time to learn about what helps the golfers score the most, and what happens when they either go off the rulebook, or make awful shots. We are going to take a look at these concepts as they can affect the performance and therefore the final score of a golfer. And this is what you need to know before placing any bets at the best Asian and European bookmakers.

The equipment for golfers

They say that the tools make the professional. Scientists have put a lot of time and effort to come up with the best supporting equipment for every sport. Not to mention money, of course. So, all of this research for golf, led to the following:

The equipment for golfers

The Clubs

Even those who know nothing about golf can realize that it’s the main instrument for the job. And it takes a set of different ones at that:

Drivers

They come with a longer shaft and a large head, and their purpose is to get maximum distance during teeing off.

Woods or long irons

They can be used to hit the ball either in teeing off or in fairways

Wedges

They feature steep angles on their heads for optimal spin control

Hybrids

Those produce a combination of the features of woods and long irons and allow for greater versatility close to or inside hazards.

Putters

Short shafts, flat heads for precision and accuracy when it's time to put the ball in the hole.

For protection from scratches, dents and moisture when they are not used, it’s best if a golfer used clubhead covers.

To put it simply, it’s a stand where the golfer places the ball for the first shot of each hole. Since the sport is of Scottish origin it’s a word derived from the word «teaz» of the Old Scottish language. There are different kinds and lengths. The standard ones are 5.4 cm long and made of either wood or durable plastic. The rules for it specifically say that it must not influence the motion of the ball, or in any way show the line of play.

Gloves

They improve the grip on the club, absorb some of the shock when hitting the balls, protect the hands and keep them warm in cold weather.

The golf bag

No golfer can go anywhere without it. All of the clubs, balls, tees, and every piece of equipment goes in there, in different pockets and compartments. As it can get really heavy (in tournaments there can be as many as 14 clubs inside), wheels can be attached for it to be moved around. Otherwise, it can be carried on the shoulder.

Shoes

While many golfers still prefer to use common running shoes, the professionals use special ones. They come with replaceable and detachable special spikes, either iron or plastic. Their purpose is to help the player keep their balance and avoid slipping on greens or when the conditions are wet. Some courses do not allow iron spikes to avoid the marks they make on greens.

Other equipment

Rangefinders, towels, repair tools, brushes, ball retrievers and other aids can also be found inside a golf bag. Each one for a specific use and for a specific purpose. Amateurs will use some of them, while others are only for professionals.

The Caddie

Just like you need the expert advice of a team of professional tipsters, so do golf players. And that’s the job of the Caddie (or Caddy). In professional or official tournaments and competitions, the players are not allowed to take advice or any sort of information from anyone else than their caddie. And that information can be about the management and details about the course, the choice of club per instance, or the range of the next target. People will see them in every court carrying the golf bags. Unfortunately, sometimes, they are thought of as servants or the errand boys. In fact, they can be an absolutely invaluable asset.

The Caddie - Golf

As the saying goes: "to err is human"

In golf this translates to 2 things. Either break a rule or take an awfully wrong shot. Or, as it happens quite often, the wrong shot leads to an infraction. The usual rule violations that incur a 1 shot addition to the total are:

In addition to the above there is a 2-stroke addition to the total if

Apart from the addition of the aforementioned number of strikes to the total, there can also be other forms of sanctions. Usually, they involve the placement of the ball after the infraction has occurred and sometimes that involves a loss of distance.

Disqualification

Typically, golf is a sport for Ladies and Gentlemen with the appropriate noble behavior. However, there are instances where this sort of decorum is violated intentionally. When this happens, the perpetrator is disqualified from the rest of the match. If the infraction is of even greater importance, or the culprit is a repeat offender, then they may be banned from the rest of the tournament.

A Mulligan

Named after David Bernard Mulligan, a 1920’s Canadian golfer who invented it, it refers to taking an extra shot without incurring a 1 or 2 shot addition to the total. If the result of the teeing off shot is unsatisfactory, or if the ball landed into water or out of bounds, then the golfer can take this extra shot right from the spot where the ball landed. It is a quite difficult shot, as the player must take it without changing anything, and it all depends where the ball landed. Sometimes it is a rather impossible hit to make.
