How to bet on ice hockey

If you’ve enjoyed watching hockey so far this year, why not take a step further? Whether you’re a lifelong fan of a particular team, a rookie to the NHL, or simply enjoy watching the sport, betting can improve the experience for everyone. However, before doing so, you need to know the intricacies of what  the best Asian and European bookmakers offer, including terms like «the Grand Salami»

In our series of articles presenting the basic terms that you are about to encounter in the various sports, we have included 2 parts of the terminology involved in Ice Hockey. If you have not immersed yourselves into studying it, we strongly suggest that you do, as you need to understand what betting on the sport is all about. We would also recommend that you studied the official rules of the game as the sport is not as easily played as the more traditional activities of football and basketball, even volleyball.

Options to choose from

In general, all of the traditional markets have been adjusted to the sport. Moneylines, Outrights, Over/Under, Correct score, Half-time and full-time options are the same. As are the selections for the scorers. However, there are some more detailed and sport-specific choices:

Penalties

Football, for example, offers options on yellow and red cards. Here you have options on the number of minor penalties, the number of major penalties, if there will be any misconducts or whether the referees will impose matching penalties. Keep in mind that the players actually hold a lethal weapon in their hands and the rules are very strict on how they must behave during the match.

Puck-Line

It’s a specific variation of a handicap bet. The weaker side receives a +1.5 puck-line advantage, while the stronger team gets a -1.5 deficit. The bet is won if the stronger side wins by 2 goals of difference or more (if the wager is backing this team), or if the underdogs lose marginally, tie or win the game, should the case be that the bet is backing them up.

The Grand Salami

An extended Over/Under bet that includes the total goals scored in a number of matches that are held on a specific day. Here, the punter may have more options on which games to combine for the total separating line. For example, they may choose a 1on 1 package which translates to the total number being under or over the limit, for all the selected matches, or they can select a «best of» package which is a more complicated selection that may provide greater profitability. For example, they may choose a total of 5 games and set the separating line to the total number of goals scored to any three of the five.

If you choose to go for such an option you need to be certain and have studied the underlying circumstances of all the games of the package to make a fully informed decision.

The last piece of advice that we can give you before you register for a betting account with broker is to watch as many games as possible. It’s the best way to get a handle on the events during the plays and when the score will be low, or when the offenses will run rampant and create a high scoring encounter.
