His journey to greatness
Today marks the 63rd birthday of a racing legend who was taken away from us too soon. In 1994, Ayrton Senna was involved in a fatal accident at the San Marino Grand Prix. The cause of the accident is still a subject of heated discussions in the racing world. While the prevailing hypothesis speaks of a broken steering wheel column due to metal fatigue, an explanation that has met with criticism and has not been accepted by everyone. Some, like Patrick Head and Damon Hill, maintain that it was a driver error. Others, like the designer of the car Adrian Newey, blamed the accident on a flat tire. Despite the controversy, his legacy lives on and continues to be an inspiration to many. Ayrton Senna da Silva, one of the greatest legends of all time in sports, was born in São Paulo. He began his career in 1984 at the age of 24, driving his first Toleman TG 184 before moving on to Lotus for the next two years. Listing Ayrton Senna’s accomplishments at the 161 Grand Prix he participated in would be redundant. His name and the reason for his status are widely known. However, his legacy both on and off the sport is less well known. The safety of motorsports has been greatly improved as a direct result of his actions while he was still a driver and after his death through the forensics of his passing.
Ayrton Senna’s legacy is not limited to his accomplishments in sports. The Instituto Ayrton Senna, which has invested more than 80 million dollars to offer opportunities to underprivileged children, is of even greater importance. After his death, it was revealed that he had secretly donated millions from his personal estate (estimated at 400 million at the time) to the poor. He should be remembered not only as a sportsman but also as a kind and generous philanthropist.
Ayrton Senna's Legacy
Frank Williams accurately pointed out Ayrton Senna’s greatness, both inside and outside the car. Nowadays, a few people started to suggest that Max Verstappen is the new Senna. While his sporting achievements could be taken as an indication of his quality, it is too soon to make any official claims regarding the caliber of the person. He still has to prove himself before one can endorse such a statement.
