Corruption in... Football – How Super League players rigged matches in Moldova

Football being tainted by corruption has been a long-standing problem. In some cases, this is done to influence betting outcomes, baffling the predictions of even the best football tipsters and making money from bets placed on games. Some of these scandals have included teams paying off referees or bribing opposing team players to throw or fix matches. This leads not only to lost revenue but it undermines the integrity of the game itself and damages its reputation among fans worldwide.

Let’s have a look at the recent example is the Super League players rigging matches. A half-league in Moldova was suspected of involvement in match-fixing. Europol and Moldovan anti-corruption officials investigated allegations that approximately 20 first-division matches in the last five months have been fixed. The suspected match-fixing involves teams, players, referees, coaches, and other individuals related to these games being involved in corrupt activities such as bribery or receiving financial incentives for influencing the outcomes of matches.

The outcome

The law enforcement officers documented for eight months the activity of a criminal group, consisting of seven members, suspected of rigging matches, with the aim of obtaining monetary means from bets. The suspects, aged between 30 and 50, are players of the Moldovan Super League and former players of a football team from the Republic of Moldova.

The suspects allegedly rigged the matches, thus causing people to participate in bets on the official websites, from which later the financial means were transferred from the accounts of some companies in Gibraltar to the accounts of some companies registered in the Moldovan IT Park. Through the supposed salaries, the group legalized the acquired financial means from criminal activity.

As a result of 17 searches carried out at the sports complex of the football team, at the homes and cars of the suspects, several accounting documents, PC processors, notebooks, a tablet, 12 mobile phones, 18 external data carriers, and 19 cards were seized. The authorities also lay hold of bank statements, draft documents, and cash in the amount of 14,300 Euros and 90,000 lei, which are to be analyzed as evidence in the criminal case.

The suspects targeted in the criminal scheme are investigated in a state of freedom and risk a fine of up to 267,500 lei or imprisonment from 2 to 6 years, in both cases with the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or exercise a certain activity for a period of 4 to 7 years.

The Moldovan Football Federation’s reaction

The MFF (Moldovan Football Federation) has strongly condemned the corruption and manipulation of matches taking place in Moldovan football. They expressed their determination to fight against such illicit activities, which it believes are damaging the integrity of the game both on and off the pitch. In response to the situation, they have created an Integrity Department within their organization to investigate and combat such practices. They are also fully supportive of any investigations conducted by the National Anticorruption Center or Europol into these matters.

In fact, to tackle the growing threat of match-fixing in football, all stakeholders need to work together. Football governing bodies must ensure strict monitoring and enforcement measures are put in place while law enforcement agencies need to bring perpetrators to justice. Players should also receive education on the dangers of match-fixing and be aware that their actions have consequences that can impact both themselves and the integrity of the sport.

Finally, clubs should develop protocols for identifying suspicious behavior from fans or players so they can take appropriate action if necessary. By working collaboratively across these areas, they will be able to reduce this criminal activity within football matches and help restore its credibility as a fair sporting event. This will allow football betting enthusiasts who open a betting account with a broker to continue to enjoy their passion with the assurance of reliable results.
