Match-Fixing in Tennis Gains a New Entry

Six-Year Ban for Match-Fixing in Tennis
On Friday, July 5, the International Tennis Integrity Agency released a statement announcing the suspension of Jasmina Tinjić, a former tennis player from Bosnia-Herzegovina. The ITIA has stated that Tinjić admitted 23 infractions of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program that took place over 2017 and 2018. In particular, match-fixing, betting facilitation, receiving money for underperformance, and not reporting corruption. As a result, she faces a six-year ban.
At 33 years old, Jasmina Tinjić once held a singles’ ranking of 236, her personal best, achieved in September 2013. Tinjić chose not to dispute these charges for the years mentioned.
2018: Tinjić's Troubles Begin
How it all started? In January 2018, the International Betting Integrity Association flagged an issue while Jasmina Tinjić was in a tournament. This led to an investigation by Swedish authorities into several of Ms. Tinjić’s tennis matches, which had suspicious betting activity, as reported by the ITIA.
The investigation led to criminal charges against her after finding her guilty of accepting a bribe of 12,000 SEK (approximately $1,160). Moreover, the investigators found evidence of fixed matches in three different countries. Also, they uncovered a bank transfer. However, the ITIA redacted the transferor’s name and other specifics of the alleged match-fixing.
Back then, the agency stated that she experienced extreme stress, anxiety, and depression at that time. Therefore, these mental health issues, compounded by her financial struggles, hindered her ability to manage them effectively. As a result, she became vulnerable and made choices she otherwise would not have made.
2022: Tinjić's Match-Fixing in Tennis Charges
Tinjić was also accountable under Swedish criminal law, where she resides, for alleged match-fixing offenses in 2022. Specifically, a four-and-a-half-year domestic ban. However, the ITIA deferred its proceedings until the completion of the criminal and domestic cases against Tinjić.
Finally, Janie Soublière, an independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer, confirmed the six-year suspension. In addition, she imposed a $20,000 fine, with $18,000 suspended. The ITIA’s six-year ban is aligned with the Swedish ban and will conclude on May 17, 2028. During her suspension, Tinjić cannot participate in, coach, or attend any tennis events authorized or sanctioned by the ITIA or any of its member organizations. Such as the ATP, ITF, WTA, and the Grand Slam committees.
