Lucas Paquetá’s “Yellow Fever” could cost him a Lifetime Ban
Are you familiar with the person in the pic? Avid football fans might recognize him from the Brazilian national team, or his victory in the 2016 Copa São Paulo de Júniores with Flamengo. You may also know him from his stints with AC Milan, Lyon, and, more recently, West Ham United. If his face still doesn’t ring a bell, it soon will. Unfortunately, for all the wrong reasons. Lucas Paquetá faces a lifetime ban as the English Football Association (FA) has formally added two new charges against the Brazilian.
In June, he got four breaches of Rule E5 and two violations of Rule F3. Specifically, he allegedly attempted to influence matches by seeking to receive a card from the match official to manipulate the betting market. A market that all bettors and the top Asian and European bookmakers know is drastically affected by such events.
These charges are unprecedented in the history of the English Premier League and represent a serious breach. The Brazilian international has promptly denied all allegations. In addition, he expressed his determination to fight with every breath to clear his name. Should the verdict be unfavorable, it could potentially end the career of the 26-year-old professional. But how did this mess start? Hint: It’s yellow.
Lucas Paquetá Faces a Lifetime Ban: Card Collection Sparks FA’s Betting Probe
Last summer, the Football Association decided to check on betting anomalies linked to a yellow card issued to the player late in the game between West Ham and Bournemouth on August 12, 2023. In this case, the match was in stalemate (1-1). Thus, there was no reason to do something that would merit the punishment.
The inquiry led to findings that broadened the scope of the investigation to include three other similar incidents. In short:
- November 12, 2022, West Ham vs Leicester City, 0-2
- March 12, 2023, West Ham vs Aston Villa, 1-1
- May 21, 2023, West Ham vs Leeds United, 3-1
From City Dreams to Ban Nightmare
The revelation of the probe disrupted the anticipated move of the player to Manchester City in the summer of 2023. The reigning champions of the English Premier League had, in principle, consented to a deal to recruit the rising talent. There was widespread anticipation that the authorities might rekindle the agreement this summer, pending his exoneration. However, suspicious bets originating from Brazil raised more red flags.
Paquetá (full name: Lucas Tolentino Coelho de Lima), hails from the small Paquetá Island located in Guanabara Bay. He chose the moniker to honor his birthplace. The connection is significant because the suspicious bets came from Duque de Caxias, which is geographically close to Paquetá Island. In addition, dubious bets were noted with Betway, the jersey sponsor of West Ham, which does not accept wagers from Brazil.
Although authorities have not formally accused the footballer of wagering, 60 individuals in his close network, are under scrutiny. In particular, they allegedly wagered bets between £7 and £400 on him being booked in the aforementioned official games, with total winnings of £100,000.
Lucas Paquetá Faces a Lifetime Ban: Spotlight on Spot-Fixing
Specifically, the allegations against him pertain to spot-fixing, a practice where minor aspects of a match, like receiving yellow cards, are allegedly influenced by an individual rather than a broader scheme. Such instances are virtually unheard of in top-tier English football.
Undoubtedly, if found guilty, the player could face severe consequences, including a lifetime ban from the sport. It remains a mystery why he, with an annual salary of approximately $9 million from West Ham, would jeopardize his burgeoning career. Especially when a successful transfer to City could have significantly boosted his earnings. And, just when it seemed like things couldn’t get worse…
Yellow Cards, Dubious Bets, and… a Missing Mobile Phone?
Yesterday Oct 9, The Sun reported that the Brazilian footballer stands accused of non-cooperation and obstruction of an investigation after authorities discovered that he had discarded his old mobile phone. The English Football Association requested the device a year ago and returned it to him after eight weeks, following a thorough examination of his calls, messages, and bank records.
Recently, the authorities once again demanded his mobile phone, only to learn that the West Ham player had thrown it away and could not find it. As a result, the FA is accusing him of obstructing the investigation with two aggravated breaches for non-cooperation. Adding to the intrigue, this action introduces a criminal element into the mix, complicating his situation even further. However, it seems he freely handed the phone over and it was checked and the FA handed it back. So, the critical question hers is if he was advised not to dispose of it.
Lucas Paquetá Faces a Lifetime Ban: The High Stakes of Fair Play
Numerous players in the Premier League have been embroiled in betting controversies, typically involving wagers on matches. Notable examples include Harry Toffolo (Nottingham Forest), Ivan Toney (Brentford), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle United), and Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool). However, none have faced allegations of deliberately influencing in-game events. If found guilty, Lucas Paquetá faces a lifetime ban, and this would be unprecedented at this level, signaling a potential shift in the severity of betting-related offenses within football.
As for the timeline, his hearing should take place next March, with a verdict likely in the second half of 2025. So, two seasons will have gone by before there’s a decision. In the meantime, Lucas will be able to play without any restrictions.
With the footballer’s fate hanging in the balance, football enthusiasts and bettors alike must recognize the delicate balance between passion and responsibility. When you open a betting account via agent isn’t just about odds; it’s about safeguarding the spirit of the game. Fair play, after all, is the ultimate goal—both on and off the field.
