Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier under investigation in federal sports betting probe
Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier is under the U.S. Integrity investigation over a 2023 betting scheme scandal while playing for the Charlotte Hornets.
Sports associations, organizations that ensure the integrity of the game and top Asian and European bookmakers are on high alert as match-fixing cases emerge at a higher rate. While sometimes it might seem that there are stones left unturned, it recently indicates that it is only a matter of time before the dormant investigations are rekindled again. This is the case with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York recent betting probe on Terry Rozier.
Terry Rozier: The journey to become the “Scary Terry”
Terry William Rozier III, is a 30-year-old American professional basketball player for the Miami Heat. Born and raised at Youngstown, Ohio, Terry started his basketball career at Shaker Heights High School. His performance saw him occupying the 74th spot on the 2012 ESPNU’s Top 100 Players.
That high performance spirit continued in the Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball which saw him declared for the 2015 NBA draft. Consequently, Rozier was selected by the Boston Celtics with the 16th overall pick. Despite his assignments with Celtic’s affiliate in the G League, Maine Red Claws, between 2015 and 2016, his performance didn’t faint. Rozier overcame his challenges to become a regular player in the NBA for Boston, appearing in 233 games from 2016-17 to 2018-19 seasons.
Although his contribution to the team was remarkable, in 2019, Boston decided to sell him to Charlotte Hornets. And it is there where the “Scary Terry” became the house hold name in the NBA. Starting in all 298 games he played for the program, Rozier was clearly a gem for the North Carolina side. Yet, they decided to part ways with him in 2023, selling him to Miami Heat in a deal that included the exchange for the veteran guard Kyle Lowry.
The Allegations: Why now?
Rozier’s legacy at Charlotte could be haunted by the recent match-fixing investigation involving a match in March 2023 between the Hornets and New Orleans. In the match in question, Rozier played just 9:34 minutes before abandoning the game due to a foot injury. Naturally, that would be quite acceptable; however, an unusual betting activity related to his performance rang the alarm.
NBA Spokesperson, Mike Bass, acknowledged the ongoing federal betting probe and said that thay were collaborating. He further stated that the league conducted an investigation back then and did not find any violation of the NBA rules. While Rozier has not been criminally charged or civilly sued over these suspicions, it is believed that the U.S. Integrity might have a lead that connects Jontay Porter to this plot. Allegedly, some of the schemers who placed proposition bets which led to Porter’s lifetime ban, had privileged info which encouraged them to place pro bets against Rozier too.
Terry Rozier: is not over yet
Should this connection be confirmed, it will mean the end for Rozier. Still, making it into the headlines for a match-fixing scandal is enough to stain his reputation for good; not only so, it could affect his performance negatively at least until this case is dropped. Conversely, for the fans and punters who aspire to open a betting account via agent, it is not a matter of the final sentence. It is a bold step to maintaining the betting experience fair and trustworthy.
