Summary of Tipster's comments

English League one action is back next weekend and I am going to wager on the Bolton vs Wigan match that is quite important for both teams. A win for Bolton would take them into Playoff position (that’s if they don’t manage to do so in this week’s fixture away fixture to Bristol Rovers who are currently 15th. On the other hand, Wigan needs to avoid defeat at this stage; with just 2 points separating them currently from the first relegation spot. I’m considering the money line market in this match, but before going further into any prediction, let’s first review the form of both teams.

Can the good run continue for The Trotters The Wanderers The Whites?

Bolton Wanderers are having a good run. They’ve not lost in their 4 last matches, scoring at least a goal in each of them:

12.11.2024
EFL Trophy
Bolton Wanderers
2-1
Fleetwood Town
23.11.2024
League One
Bolton Wanderers
2-1
Blackpool
26.11.2024
League One
Cambridge United
1-1
Bolton Wanderers
03.12.2024
League One
Bolton Wanderers
3-1
Mansfield Town

Their last game against Mansfield Town was a thriller! It was well-fought and Mansfield had the upper hand in the early parts of the game, which they made good use of. A stunning header from Hiram Boateng in the 34th minute completely beat Baxter and headed straight into the far-right corner. Later in that match, the first-half hero would later turn into the villain by conceding a red card in the 70th minute. This completely changed the dynamics of the match. Bolton went on to score 3 goals (75’, 80’, and 85’) recording a greatly needed comeback.

They will look to draw inspiration from this comeback win when they lock horns away to Bristol Rovers in the League this week then at home midweek in the EFL Cup against Huddersfield Town, before later facing Wigan Athletic on the 14th.

Wigan Athletic – The Underdog

The defeat recorded by the Latics this week put an end to their 4-game unbeaten streak! A well-deserved loss from a Huddersfield Town side that put together some good football despite the 61% ball possession of the lads. Here’s a table showing the last 5 results of the Tics:

12.11.2024
EFL Trophy
Wigan Athletic
0-0
Nottingham Forest U21
23.11.2024
League One
Barnsley
0-1
Wigan Athletic
26.11.2024
League One
Wigan Athletic
2-1
Northampton Town
30.11.2024
League One
Cambridge United
1-2
Wigan Athletic
03.12.2024
League One
Wigan Athletic
1-0

Thelo Aasgaard has been a key player for the Latics this season, netting 5 goals in 17 appearances. Dale Taylor, Matthew Smith and Dion Rankine have already contributed greatly to the descent run of form of the Tics and Shaun Maloney will be counting on them to step up their game in this crucial away fixture to Bolton Wanderers.

Head-to-Head Stats

Despite being better-placed on the League table, Bolton Wanderers haven’t beaten Wigan in their last 9 confrontations. The last 2 time they met, Wigan won 4-0 and 1-0.

Bolton vs Wigan Prediction

Before facing off on December 14th, both teams have 2 interesting matches to play. Regardless of the outcome of those games, I already have a bet market in mind for this clash. I’m just watching out for any team news or injury that may affect the prediction.

All things being equal, I will be sending an update to this tip next week with the final analysis and bet to place.

Update

Bolton Wanderers recorded a crucial win at home against Mansfield Town 3-1 that helped them move 1-point clear of the playoff spot with a 1 match advantage which if they win will take them to the 5th spot. Furthermore, they capitalized on their good run of form to defeat a solid Huddersfield Town side on a 3-1 scoreline. The game would have ended 3-0 if not for a late own-goal conceded by Josh Dacres-Cogley in the 90th minute.

While Bolton recorded back-to-back wins, their opponent for the next match did the opposite! A 2-0 loss at home to Leyton Orient followed by a 3-2 away loss to Chesterfield now means the Latics are on a 3-games losing streak and playing away to Bolton Wanderers who are having a great run isn’t exactly what Shaun Maloney would have wished for if he had the choice.

For this Bolton vs Wigan match, I’m backing Bolton Wanderers to win, but I anticipate a tough first half. Hence, I’m going for a draw at half time with an odd around 2.290.
