Let’s make this one a visit to a world that we very rarely go to. Time for a United Rugby Championship event and the confrontation between Cardiff and the Ospreys on the first day of the new year at 15:00 at Cardiff Arms Park. And full of peculiarities this one is (as master Yoda would put it).

4th vs 14th but nothing is as it appears

Looking at the records of the two sides, it seems like an easy deal for the hosts. Cardiff show 4 wins and 3 losses. However, they also show a -17 differential and they are where they are only because they managed to win their last 2 after a series of 3 consecutive losses. While they do show up at spot 4 of the standings with 21 points, it feels that it’s a quite fragile balance that can be shattered quite easily.

On the other hand, the visitors have only 1 victory during their last 5 having won one more thus far. It is more deserving of the 14th spot and the 11 points that they have gathered. However, if they can win the in-between confrontation with the Scarlets and then manage to emerge victorious from the match in question, then the table will be reversed. Of course, a lot will also depend on the result of the match that the hosts have to play away against the Dragons.

Too early to judge the odds

No matter what the bookmakers think, the Ospreys won two out of the 3 matches they played against Cardiff in 2024, and they have also won 5 out of the last 6. This shows a definite pattern for a psychological advantage that negates the fact that they are playing an away game. In any case we will be keeping an eye an all developments they should be taken into account when we get back to it, a week from now.

Update

The Ospreys did manage to get a victory out of their match against the Scarlets, even if it was a marginal one by 23-22. Tonight, Cardiff play against the Dragons and, since their opponents are the last ones on the table, one way or another, they will win. While the visitors are still 14th, the situation has changed at the top after the Sharks defeated the Bulls by 20-17, rising up to spot 4, overtaking Cardiff who is now 5th.

The key is scoring 4 tries and losing with less than 7

Any team in the league that scores 4 tries and loses with a margin of 7 points or less gets an extra one or two points. Winners can get up to 5 points. So, if the Ospreys get 4 tries and win by less than 7 (a quite reasonable assumption) they will reduce the deficit from the 5th spot to just 2 points. Ostensibly they may get themselves up to 7th, considering that 6th Munster have 21 points like Cardiff.

Similarly, a 5-point worth win, can get the hosts all the way up to 3rd and above the Bulls. Glasgow and Leinster are way ahead at 32 and 38 points respectively and it seems that the title will be a 2-horse race between these two.

The odds favor the Ospreys

At this time, it’s @1.76 for the visitors and @2.20 for the hosts. We would have preferred other markets; however, the holidays are also for the bookmakers and they are still not available. The prices are quite understandable, given the history between the two. However, we will go with the home field advantage for this one and suggest a win for the Cardiff Blues. And so should you, if you open an account at the best betting platform.
