It’s derby time in Manchester! Manchester City will host Manchester United on matchday 11 at the Joie Stadium, Manchester on Sunday 19th, 2025 at 7:45 PM. The Citizens are 2nd and 6 points behind solid leaders Chelsea while Manchester United is 4th, level on points with Arsenal. This match is very important for both teams, as a defeat for either side will seriously affect their chances for the title. Let’s proceed to analyze the recent form of both teams and then find a valuable wager.
Manchester City – A Drop of Form
The Citizens have dropped form recently as evidenced in the consecutive losses recorded away to Everton in the Super League 1-2 and away to Barcelona 0-3. Against Everton, they could easily have lost by a wider margin as the defense line looked very porous. Against Barcelona, it was evident from the start that The Citizens were no match! If not for Keateng in the goalposts saving all the first attempts, the scoreline could easily have been 5 to 6 nil.
Despite being at home, if City don’t step up their game, especially in the defense line, Man United will inflict another loss.
Gareth Taylor and his girls will be away to Ipswich Town in round 4 of the FA Cup this weekend. Ipswich Town has been brilliant in the FA Women’s Premier League Premier Division this season. In 11 matches, they’ve won 9 and drawn 2. Also, they score lots of goals, and this is something they will need when they face a top-tier Super League side like City on the 12th of January.
The injuries of Alex Greenwood, Lauren Hemp, Vivianne Miedema, and Khadija Shaw can explain the recent poor performances. Luckily for Gareth Taylor, they are gradually returning to the squad at this critical period of the season.
Knowing this, let’s see if United has what it takes to undo the Citizens.
Manchester United – Title Contender
Manchester United Women are doing what fans are asking of their male counterparts! That is, to play good football, score goals and concede few. They are currently 4th with 21 points, just 1 less than City, and from the way they play, analysts say they are the real title contenders able to challenge Chelsea. If the players of Coach Skinner can avoid injuries, we shouldn’t be surprised if they end up at least in the top 3.
G. Clinton, E. Terland, and M. Mary have all been key contributors to the success of Manchester United so far and the team will greatly depend on them in this derby.
Before the clash, United will host West Bromwich Albion in the 4th round of the FA Cup this weekend. This shouldn’t be a hard nut to crack for Skinner’s girls, so I anticipate an easy win.
Head-to-Head Stats
They’ve faced each other 15 times, Manchester City won 8 times, Man United won 3 times, and 4 ended in draws. Both teams score BTTS is a good market to consider in this kind of derby and historically has occurred several times these two sides met.
The Prediction
Bookmakers are slowly releasing the early odds for this derby, but I’m waiting to see how both teams will fair during their respective FA Cup matches to give you guys my most accurate tip, so, look out for the update coming next week.
Update
Just a few days left before the amazing derby that awaits us at the Joie Stadium! Without much surprise, The Citizens overcame Ipswich Town in round 4 of the Women’s FA Cup, thus ending their 2-games winless streak and gaining some much-needed confidence as they prepare to face their arch-rivals Manchester United whose male team has started winning again after much turmoil. The goals were scored by J. Roord 20’, L. Coombs 55’, and V. Miedema 76’.
On the other hand, the Manchester United Women asserted complete dominance on West Bromwich Albion in their FA Cup game by a large score of 7-0. R. Williams scored a hattrick (77’, 79’, 90’+1), Bizet Ildhusøy scored a brace 89’,90’+5) whilst Malard and Toone equally netted one each. A. Sandberg performed well in that encounter, providing assists for 3 of the 7 goals.
As can be seen from both team’s performances in the 4th round of the FA Cup, we can say without fear of contradiction that this derby will be very different from what we’ve been used to so far.
Manchester City had the better share of victories the last time they faced each other, but this time Manchester United is much stronger and more determined than ever to take all 3 points. A draw won’t be something either Gareth Taylor or Skinner would accept when the referee blows the final whistle.
I anticipate a close game with not many opportunities in the first half and the game opening towards the last 20 minutes. Hence, I’m betting on a half-time draw in this match at an odd of 2.33.
