Today, I will be exploring a different sport from what you guys have been used to! Specifically, I’m previewing the much-awaited Top 14 rugby clash between Bayonne AKA “Aviron Bayonnais” and Clermont Auvergne. As always, this is a potentially fiery fixture, and with both sides playing as well as they are currently, we’re looking for a well-fought encounter.
Bayonne – The Home Advantage
First of all, let’s consider Bayonne at home at the Stade Jean-Dauger. That stadium is a fortress, and the passionate Basque supporters will be urging their side on. On their home turf, Bayonne hasn’t lost in over 6 months. Recently, they defeated 2nd-placed Bordeaux Begles 36-32. Bayonne has used that home ground in defeating Clermont.
Bayonne mostly struggles when away from home, but they are a team that can defeat any opponent when they execute their game plan properly.
They are currently 4th on the table with 43 points and they aim to finish the season in the top 6 to play next season’s Champions Cup. Grégory Patat is fully aware of what’s at stake and will certainly find the right words to keep his players motivated. Below is a table showing their recent performances:

The win against Bordeaux Begles was a very important one for the confidence of the team as they will be traveling next to very difficult terrain to face the league leaders Toulouse. Will they repeat the exploit? Let’s wait and see, but one thing is certain, if they put forth the same tactical and offensive display as they did against Bordeaux Begles, they will pose serious problems for leaders.
Clermont Auvergne – The Lost Glory
Although a classic Top 14 giant, Clermont has been a bit shaky on the road this year. They have an unbelievable amount of talent in their side, with internationals spread across the back of the team. Therefore, their backline has the flair and imagination to beat any defense. Their front pack, however, needs to match the physicality of Bayonne if they are to win the game by a landslide. And for Clermont, discipline will be critical. Awarding penalties in their half will allow Bayonne to exert pressure and potentially convert such opportunities into points. And the tactical awareness along with their kicking game will be crucial to controlling the game’s tempo.
They are currently 5th, with 38 points, and on a bad streak of 2 consecutive Top 14 defeats. Further, they lost 3 of their last 5 games in all competitions.

Next, they face Bordeaux Bègles in a crucial away fixture this weekend and a defeat here is not permitted for Head Coach Christophe Urios and his squad, as it will jeopardize their chances of finishing in the top 6 spots that qualify for European competition.
The Head-to-Head Record
Although Clermont perhaps holds a very slight historical advantage, more contemporary battles at Bayonne have been significantly more balanced.

Overall, this match contains all the elements of a classic Top 14 encounter. Homefield advantage for Bayonne and Clermont’s constellation of stars makes this an intriguing clash to look out for. I envisage a tight contest, perhaps to be decided by a single score.
Maybe it will be a test of forwards, with each forwards unit trying to overwhelm, or maybe it will be an exhibition of backline playmaking, with each defense eager to create try-scoring opportunities. Ultimately, the team that commits fewer mistakes and handles play with more aplomb at crucial junctures is likely to be the victor. Truthfully, it is a straight-up 50/50 call.
Update
Both teams recorded losses on matchday 17. Bayonne was overpowered by Toulouse 41-6, while Clermont Auvergne were narrowly defeated by Bordeaux Bègles 22-18. And although experts all anticipate a win for Bayonne in the next matchup, I am backing Clermont Auvergne.
Clermont has long built its reputation on a dominant forward pack. When they’re in good form, their maul and scrum are weapons to be feared. If they can take control in these areas, they’ll dictate the pace and territory of the game. We saw this against Bordeaux, despite losing the match they were very solid. This strength can be particularly valuable against any side, by creating penalties, and offering a very solid foundation for the back line to play off.
Furthermore, Clermont usually has a backline with some combination of experienced grizzled veterans and thrilling talents. Provided that their key play-makers are firing on all cylinders, they possess the firepower to break through the tightest defense. Their ability to make moments of personal genius can flip a match on its head.
Lastly, even though Bayonne has a strong home record, a professional team like Clermont Auvergne, will try to shatter it. They are capable of playing away from home. If Clermont can remain resolute in the face of adversity and maintain discipline, they will pull out a surprise win. Still don’t have an account?
