To the rather complicated Premiership of Northern Ireland we go and Belfast’s Oval Stadium where on March 18 at 19:45 GMT, the local Glentoran will face Larne. The match was originally scheduled for January 18 but it was postponed. It’s actually one of the two less matches than Larne have in this year’s race.
The prize is the 2nd spot
The usual champions Linfield are again way ahead on the table with 67 points and very few things can be done so that they can lose this title. In fact, only one: commit suicide. Since this is far from likely to happen, the motive for the hosts is to maintain the 2nd place that they have now at 51 points with 15 wins, 6 draws and 8 losses. Actually, they too have one less game as the match they were supposed to play against Glenavon was also postponed.
The visitors are currently 5th at 43 points with a record of 12 victories, 7 ties and 9 defeats. Except the match in discussion, they also owe the one against Ballymena United. This one, in fact, has been postponed twice! With 8 points to cover, they need to win both of these matches and hope for a mishap from the part of Glentoran to have a shot for spot 2. Of course, there must also be mishaps from Dungannon Swifts and the Crusaders currently holding 3rd and 4th spots.
It is not at all impossible
During 2024:
- 2-0 on Nov 11
- 2-0 on Sep 20
- 1-2 on Apr 18
- 3-0 on Feb 23
During 2023:
- 2-1 on Nov 24
- 2-1 on Aug 11
- 2-0 on Apr 07
- 1-0 on Jan 14
8 consecutive wins for Larne either at home or away, since October 28 2022, when the last victory for Glentoran was recorded. And a massive one it was at 4-0. We can clearly see a pattern of 2 to 3 goals having being scored between the two sides. Therefore, it is quite reasonable to say that the visitors have a greater chance to win this one as well.
We will be waiting for the odds for over/under or spread
We will not look at the odds at this time anyway. Larne will probably win the in-between match they have to play at Loughgall and we will wait to see if there are any developments there that may affect the outcome of the bout in question.
Update
The situation has changed dramatically on this one. When we began the conversation Glentoran had 51 points and only managed to get a 3-3 draw against Glenavon moving to 52. However, Larne have managed to defeat Loughgall by 1-0 and Ballymena United by 2-1 advancing to 49 and therefore to 3rd place. A win will get them 2nd. So, both sides have everything to fight for.
Things can still change
That’s because Larne play Coleraine at home, in a match that’s not as easy to win as it looks. On the other hand, Glentoran travel to Carrick Rangers for an away match that should not be a problem to them. Any other result for the visitors of our match in discussion than a victory will draw them back from their goal.
Unfortunately, at the time that this update is being written, the above matches are in full progress and the odds for those of March 18 have been temporarily disabled until the outcomes are decided. We will base our suggestion for this one on the chances that say that the most probable winners wirll be the hosts. Therefore we will propose the victory for Glentoran at @1.95, over that of the visitors Larne which begets @2.30.
