The season for Major League Baseball is well on its way and we will have a most interesting confrontation at the Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York, between the local team and the Giants of San Francisco coming all the way from the other side of the country. The match is set to start at 19:05 GMT on April 12. And we have two opposite courses to discuss.
3rd vs 11th but things are not what they seem
The Yankees may lay 5th in the American League; however, they have only played 5 games instead of 7. So, their record of 3 wins and 2 losses with a GB of 1 and a PCT of 0.6 are not quite indicative of their capabilities. In the overall standings for the whole of the MLB they are 11th. On the other hand, again with two games less (6 vs 8), the Giants are 3rd both in the National League and the MLB overall with a record of 5 victories and a single loss, GB=2, PCT=0.833.
The issue to seriously consider here is not the record itself. It’s the fact that the visitors begun the season by losing the 2nd match to the Reds but they have yet to lose since. In contrast, the hosts begun with three consecutive wins; however, they continued with 2 consecutive losses. Nevertheless, we do not think that this will play a significant part when they meet each other on Apr 12.
Yankees all the way
What will matter is the fact that regardless of which stadium they have met, the Yankees have prevailed 9 out of the last 10 times. Since 2016, there has only been 1 victory for the Giants on April 1st 2023 with a 7-5 score. The next day the New Yorkers rampaged by 6-0… probably furious for the defeat. Another fact to consider is that after that loss, the hosts scored 6,6,7 and 7 runs on the visitors. This is quite an indicator to use when we are choosing the markets for this confrontation.
Before it’s time for them to face each other, the Yankees will host the Diamondbacks and will travel to the Pirates, while the Giants will host the Mariners twice. At the end of those encounters we will have a lot clearer picture on how the two sides perform on the pitch.
Update
After the latest results of the two sides, the Giants moved up to 2nd place losing to leaders Padres on the details. On the other hand, the Yankees dropped a spot and are now 12th. However, what is most interesting are the outcomes:
Yankees
- vs the Diamondbacks: 1st match: 5-7, 2nd match: 3-4, 3rd match: 9-7
- vs the Pirates: 1st match 9-4, 2nd match: 10-4, 3rd match: 4-5
- vs the Tigers: 1st match: 2-6, 2nd match: 0-5, 3rd match: 4-3
i.e 5 losses and 4 wins. Now they stand at a total record of 7 and 5.
Giants
- vs the Astros: 1st match: 7-2, 2nd match: 3-1, 3rd match: 6-3
- vs the Mariners: 1st match: 10-9, 2nd match: 4-1, 3rd match: 5-4
- vs the Reds: 1st match: 0-2, 2nd match: 0-1, 3rd match: 8-6
i.e. 7 wins and 2 defeats. Total record: 9 and 3.
The advantage to the Giants
Based on the above, it would seem that San Francisco have a definite advantage over New York. They have performed better, they score better, they are more efficient. However, it is not what the bookmakers say. At this time, it’s @1.90 for the Giants and @1.91 for the Yankees. We will follow the safest route on this one and will suggest to anyone that wants to open an account at the best betting platform, the win for the San Francisco Giants.
