My preview of this week is on the rivalry between two iconic MLS teams, New York Red Bulls and Inter Miami, at the iconic Sports Illustrated Stadium on July 19th, at 11:30 PM GMT. A match between last season’s MLS Cup runners-up and Supporters’ Shield winners promises to be nothing short of action. Both teams are aiming for a qualification spot in the final series, and a defeat here could be catastrophic in the pursuit of this objective. This NY Red Bulls vs Inter Miami game offers lots of betting opportunities for us to explore, and that’s what we’re going to do.
Current Form and League Standings
Inter Miami, as of early July, sits comfortably in 6th place among the MLS standings after having obtained 32 points from 17 games. Right behind them, in 8th place, are their Red Bulls rivals, having 30 points after 21 games. Don’t let these rankings fool you, though. Miami has had four fewer games, which, if they win all, will take them straight to the top of the Eastern Conference. When comparing points per game, things become more defined: Miami sits at 1.88, with their Red Bulls rivals lagging at 1.43.
These last six matches between them in MLS have been incredibly evenly paired. Red Bulls were able to win 2 games, 3 resulted in a tie, and 1 game was a loss on their part, tallying 9 goals throughout this period. On the other hand, Inter Miami’s last six games across competitions resulted in 3 wins, 2 ties, and 1 loss, scoring 13 goals in the process. The defeat was a 4-0 trashing from PSG in the FIFA World Club Cup that sent them packing from the tournament. They immediately bounced back by beating Montréal 4-1 away from home.
Home edge or away team?
The Red Bulls are playing at home, which can be a huge psychological edge. Their home record this season is quite strong: 7 wins, 2 draws, and just 1 loss from 10 home games. They’ve been scoring freely at home too, with a ratio of 25 goals scored to 10 conceded. That’s an average of 2.5 goals scored per home game. Impressive!
Inter Miami, by contrast, is good on the road. Their away form sheet reads 4 victories, 3 draws, and a mere 1 defeat out of 8 games on foreign soil in the MLS, with 18 goals scored and 13 conceded. Which gives us an outstanding 2.25 goals per away encounter.
NY Red Bulls vs Inter Miami Defensive and Scoring Stats Analysis
Let’s talk numbers, specifically goals. Inter Miami boasts a formidable attack, averaging 2.35 goals per game this season. They’ve netted 40 goals in 17 matches. Lionel Messi, their main man, has been sensational, with 12 goals in 14 league appearances. Luis Suárez isn’t far behind, with 5 goals and a whopping 8 assists. These guys are serious threats.
The Red Bulls are by no means weak, having scored 33 times in 21 games, a mighty average of 1.57 per match. The top scorer is Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, having scored 11 times in 20 games. Another crucial member of their outfit is Emil Forsberg, having scored 7 times and provided 5 assists so far.
Defensively, the Red Bulls have been incredibly stable. In 21 games, their defense has conceded just 25 goals, meaning 1.19 goals conceded per game on average. When compared to Miami’s 17 games and 28 goals conceded, that would represent 1.65 goals conceded per game on average. This does show a small advantage on defense by the Red Bulls’ solidity, which will be much needed against the best offensive side of the league, led by the legendary Messi.
Head-to-Head History
Head-to-head competition between these two teams shows a fragile state of equilibrium. In their last six MLS regular season confrontations, Red Bulls won 3 and Inter Miami won 3. However, Inter Miami dominated the two previous meetings. In their latest encounter, Miami convincingly dominated Red Bulls with a resounding 4-1 on 04.05.2025. Before that, they won 6-2 on 05.05.2024.
The Betting Angles
Points to Consider Given both teams’ attacking abilities, their “Both Teams to Score (BTTS)” becomes a very viable option. Miami always has stellar numbers in goals scored and goals allowed. Similarly, Red Bulls have been quite a scoring threat on their ground. “Over 2.5 Goals” is also a very attractive option. Miami’s 2.35 goal average and Red Bulls’ 1.57 are combined with both teams’ good form on away and home grounds, making a high-scoring match a very likely prospect.
My Bet
I’m more inclined towards the goals market, but I will be waiting to see how both teams perform in their respective features leading up to the clash. The Red Bulls will play Philadelphia in the US Open Cup on July 10, 2025, then in the MLS on July 13, 2025 (both away), before hosting New England on July 17, 2025, and then facing Messi’s Inter Miami. While Inter Miami play New England on 10.07.2025 and Cincinnati on 17.07.2025 before the clash against the New York Red Bulls.
Update
New York Red Bulls recorded a loss last weekend, 0-2 against Philadelphia. They host New England on the 17.07.2025 and need a positive result after their very poor run of form that has seen them go for a month without a win. Inter Miami, on the other hand, continued with their winning ways. After beating New England, they defeated Nashville 2-1 at home and will face Cincinnati on the road next. All the goals in their last two fixtures were scored by one man, and you guessed correctly if you said Messi. The Argentine is having a great season and seems to only get better with age.
I discussed the BTTS and Over/Under betting markets in my preview, but considering how both teams have been performing and the great form of players such as Lionel Messi, I am compelled to back Inter Miami at 2.489 in this match against New York Red Bulls.
