No Love for the Czech Tennis Federation: A Scandal of Epic Proportions

Latest Czech Tennis Federation scandal. Top officials, among them its president Ivo Kaderka, have been accused of misappropriating subsidies.
Tennis is often associated with fair play, integrity, and respect. However, it is not immune to scandals that tarnish its reputation. How did the Czech Tennis Federation Serve a Double Fault of Fraud and Corruption
The investigation carried by the National Centre for Combating Organized Crime (NCOZ) and the Supreme Public Prosecutor’s Office, revealed that the CTF:
- Is part of illegal activities that include fraud, money laundering, tax evasion, and breach of trust, since 2016.
- Has siphoned off public funds and sponsorships. Money that was intended to be spent on tennis development, especially for young and talented players.
- Abused its power and position, to influence the selection of players, coaches, and referees.
The main suspects in the case are:
- The president Ivo Kaderka
- The financial director and accountant, Hana Baierová, and, above all
- Vojtěch Flégl, head of the sports association Orel Jednota Praha-Balkán.
The charges they face can amount up to 10 years in prison.
The Fallout of the CTF Scandal
The scandal has triggered a series of reactions and measures from various authorities and organizations. The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, overseeing the CTF, has taken the following actions:
- Suspended the federation’s activities and funding until the investigation is over
- Appointed a temporary administrator to oversee its affairs and ensure the continuity of its operations, and
- Announced that it will conduct an audit of the finances and management, while cooperating with the law enforcement agencies to clarify the situation.
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) (the international governing body of tennis) has also reacted to the investigation by:
- Expressing its concern and support for the investigation
- Stating that it will monitor the developments and take appropriate action, if it identifies any violations of its rules and regulations, and
- Assuring that the CTF scandal will not affect the participation of Czech players and teams in international competitions, such as the Davis Cup and the Fed Cup.
