The Glossary of e-sports Part IV
In the previous three parts of our E-Sports Glossary, we have explored the terms pertaining to games belonging to the MOBA genre and a multiplayer TFPS like Counter Strike. Time to examine in more details the entire culture that is based on releases that fall under the category of FPS or First Person Shooter games. While CS2 is undoubtedly the flagship, no one can forget legendary titles like Call of Duty, Apex legends, Rust, Team Fortress 2 and others.
What is a first person shooter game
Instead of watching and controlling an avatar from the outside, in this sort of game the player is actually on the inside of the character watching things through the eyes of said character. The concept is to give the player the idea of what would happen, if they were actually themselves facing the conditions of the games, instead of the further look that comes with MOBAs.
In both genres there is an equal amount of intense fighting of the opponents in a Player vs Player (PvP) environment, with the tactical decisions that have to be made in order to win. The other common denominator between the two genres is that the round does not end with the killing of the opponent. It ends when a certain objective is achieved.

Let’s begin exploring what people mean when they are using certain words:

The most successful FPS Games
As aforementioned, the title belongs to Counter Strike 2. The average number of players at any given time goes up to 900,887, while the 24-hour peak can reach 1,458,551. The all-time high is 1,818,773. PUBG: Battlegrounds is a far second at 416,775, 749,134 and 3,257,248 respective numbers. Honestly, it is surprising to see Call of Duty ranked 3rd with quite low numbers: 187,670, 230,335, 491,670.
The list includes 5,000 titles and the statistics say that the average of players spending their time on this genre is will over 2,000,000, with a 24-hour peak reaching just about 10 million. Therefore, it should not come as a surprise that the international tournaments have raised the interest of both media and the betting chain. It may not be as high as the MOBA genre, and the prize pools may not be as rich, but it is quite significant. Enough for someone to become a professional.
MOBA and FPS Games: An industry that constantly grows
The numbers of people that have tied themselves up with the industry are staggering. In the entire world there are 3.32 billion active gamers. 1.5 of those are just in Asia. The number rises by 1 billion every 8 years. The field is so competitive that only 500 of those make it to the top ranks of professional e-sports players. It is not an understatement to say that these people are de facto the best of the best.
The more the industry grows, the more money will be poured into it. And that means more gains for those involved on all levels. Including those who will decide to open an account via agent and begin placing their bets on the long list of games that comprise the international tournaments.
